Board Nominees

Here is a brief statement from each of the Friends of Nepal members that have been nominated for the Board.

President

(Aaron Rome, N’172)

I have been involved with Friends of Nepal since 2000. I served on the grants committee for about 7 years and have been the President of the Board for the past 3 years. I would like to remain the board president for another 2 year term. In addition to managing and improving communication with our members through our website, I intend to facilitate more involvement of our members in Friends of Nepal activities including our Bhutanese Refugee Program, Grants Committee, newsletter and micro-grants program. I will also coordinate with our membership and leverage our network to help re-establish the Peace Corps program in Nepal as prudently as possible.

I was a PCV in Nepal from 1991-1993 in Khotang District. My assignment was Water and Sanitation and I worked with UNICEF to establish a new program to protect springs and develop water systems in very arid hill villages. I appreciate your vote.

There, she taught seventh-grade science and trained junior high and high school teachers on practical science skills. She has edited the Friends of Nepal newsletter since late 2007 and joined the Board of Friends of Nepal in early 2009. She is running for re-election as editor of the newsletter and secretary of Friends of Nepal. Tamara lives in San Diego with her husband, a Nepali national, and toddler son.

At-Large – Networking and Coalition Building

(Dave Carlson, N’ 3)

I would like to run for the Board of FoN focusing on the area of Networking – with other organizations concerned with assisting Bhutanese assimilation into our country and others involved in promoting the needs of grass root assistance within the country of Nepal.

As a current board member I have concentrated on the Bhutanese assimilation issue into the US  over the past 6 months but am in hopes others will come forward to take on that responsibility as board applicants.

I believe there is a rich potential for non-profit organizations in the US and abroad to combine our strength and promote a more comprehensive approach to resolving issues of poverty among the Nepalese people.  Friends of Nepal is in a unique position to elicit the support of so many others in a coordinated effort to address this issue. It is not so much about raising money as identifying individuals and groups within the communities of Nepal  that posses a creative capacity and a will  to make change happen.  This must be our target.

I am a current paid member of the NPCA and FoN.

Grants Committee Chair
(Valeri Stori)
Val Stori joined the Projects Commitee in 2004 and has served as its chair since 2007 .  Though not a PCV, Val worked in Nepal for many years and was happy to discover FoN as a way to contribute to organizations improving the livelihoods of Nepalis.  She’s just finished up a Masters in Environmental Law in Vermont where she lives on a farm with her dogs, cats, and chickens. Val is seeking re-election to this position.
At Large
(Lucy Sotar, N’3)
Lucy Sotar, Nepal 3, served on the Fon Board for two years (2006-2008) as secretary and on the projects committee..  Before joining the Board she organized the FoN reception and fund raising for the FSNs who lost their jobs when the Peace Corps was taken out of Nepal.  Living in the Washington, DC, area, she has access to the resources of the Peace Corps and associated groups representing Nepal and the Peace Corps.
