Our friend Indra Vilas Akela has been identified with lung cancer and is undergoing expensive treatment in Chitwan. Indra was an integral member of the PCN community from the 80’s through Peace Corps Nepal’s final days in 2004. More info will be posted here and on the homepage as it becomes available.

Indra comes from Lumjung district, where he served as Headmaster and retired. He joined Peace Corps during 1981 as a Language Trainer. Indra gradually became Training Project Director and also assisted in many training and program related assignments. The CPNM had been harrasing him and his family so he was compelled to build a house near Samakhusi, Kathmandu. He has one son and one daughter, both married and live with their family. Indra lost one son, who was drawned in one of the rivers in Lumjung. Indra has been sick for about two years. His wife also has severe back problem.

Indra has been diagnosed with lung cancer. He just started taking chemo and radio therapy in B.P. Cancer Hospital. Indra, however is in his usual great spirit and remembers every single PCV/N he served and his colleagues. We will keep you posted his further developments.

The Former Peace Corps Nepal Employees Committee (FPCNEC) has contributed $265 from its fund gerenerated from the fixed deposit account that was established out of the money FON contributed during PC/Nepal Closure. FPCNEC has collected about $375 so far to additionally contribute from individual members personally. The total cost of his treatment is roughly $3000 – a large sum for a Nepali but an amount I think our community can certainly barn-raise.
