A Campaign to Double the Peace Corps by 2011
My name is Rajeev Goyal, and I am coordinating the MorePeaceCorps.org Campaign (website will be up in June) which was launched by the NPCA in January 2008 to double the budget and number of serving volunteers in the Peace Corps by 2011. The campaign is being advised by M+R Strategic Service, a campaign consulting firm (mrss.com).
Presently, demand for volunteers exceeds supply; more than 20 additional countries have applied for programs and the Peace Corps, with a shoestring budget of $331 million, needs expanded resources to respond. This campaign seeks to channel the energy of returned and serving volunteers and staff as well as their families to develop a broad outreach and legislative campaign to move Peace Corps one step closer to President Kennedy’s original vision of 100,000 volunteers working alongside host country nationals to effect desired change, create goodwill, and enrich the U.S. by returning to it a large body of men and women familiar with foreign cultures and dedicated to service.
Responding to the desire of the Peace Corps community, MorePeaceCorps.org also seeks to develop a framework for lowering barriers to participation, provide more program offerings through strategic alliances, expand opportunities available through the Peace Corps Masters and Fellows programs, make more nimble use of technology, and respond to demands from countries requesting Peace Corps and individuals who want to serve
Over 100 officers from RPCV affiliate groups have been contacted and the response has been overwhelmingly supportive. Four new volunteers joined the campaign to make calls on its behalf in March. $25,000 was raised at the NPCA Director’s Circle Conference to build a website for the campaign by June.
Anyone inspired by Peace Corps, who wishes for it to realize its promise is welcome, whether or not you served as a volunteer. Please contact me at rgoyal@mrss.com, 917.438.4626 for further details about volunteer opportunities. We would also greatly value a letter of endorsement from Friends of Nepal as we try to build a block endorsement from all 130+ RPCV affinity groups by July 2008.
Thank you.
Best Wishes,
Rajeev Goyal
